The $523mil AUD Mordialloc Freeway Project comprises a 9 km freeway link between Dingley Bypass and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Springvale Road. The alignment included the following:
- Several grade-separated interchanges
- Bridges over wetlands and Mordialloc Creek
- A parallel cycling/walking path along its length
Tonkin + Taylor took on the role of lead designer, providing geotechnical, landfill, environmental, and contamination management consultancy effective and cost-efficient services for the project. Our focus encompassed several critical areas of development.
Firstly, we specialised in developing robust, innovative, and cost-effective solutions for ground improvement. These measures were implemented to enhance the stability and performance of the project in challenging ground conditions. Furthermore, we provided differing foundation solutions that were both robust and innovative. These solutions supported the construction of six bridges, noise walls, signs, and barriers, considering the complex and varying ground conditions present at the site.
Our expertise extended to designing a passive landfill gas system to effectively mitigate the impacts of landfill gas migration while ensuring compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements.
Lastly, we offered invaluable pavement engineering support and advice during the construction phase. This support contributed to the development of a reliable and durable pavement infrastructure.
The Mordialloc Freeway opened to the public on 21 Nov 2021 – ahead of schedule.
